Investment schemes
We provide water and sewerage services of the highest standards and are regarded as the best performing and one of the most efficient water and sewerage companies in England and Wales.

To continue to deliver these high standards you receive and make further improvements we are investing around £1 billion between 2010 and 2015.
We have focused on delivering an investment programme which includes improvements that customers have told us they see as most important.
This may involve carrying out schemes in your local area.
In addition to a number of schemes aimed at protecting and improving the environment, we will be supporting the work of several wildlife and conservation projects through our partners programme.
How are we improving services? | Major schemes 2010-2015 | Water and sewerage
How are we improving services?
Improving the quality of drinking water
- improving appearance and taste of water for 200,000 customers by:
- renewing a further 74km of pipes
- improving two water sources - replacing 2,000 lead pipes.
Improving water supply reliability
- controlling leakage and reducing the likelihood of bursts by renewing 271km of water pipes
- renewing 97,000 household meters
- increasing the reliability of your water supply:
- through further protection of our water treatment sites from flooding
- by ensuring every customer can be supplied from at least two different sources - installing free water meters to households that request one.
Reducing the risk of sewage flooding
- reducing the risk of flooding from the sewer for 500 customers.
Improving the environment
- contributing to healthier river flows by reducing the amount of water we need to take from the environment
- improving 15 sewage treatment works to meet new environmental standards
- reducing our carbon footprint by increasing the amount of renewable energy we generate from sewage sludge.
Reducing the risk of pollution
- improving sewer overflows
- providing public sewers for 580 properties where current drainage is poor
- protecting critical assets from the risk of flooding
- increasing the capacity of sewage treatment works so that they can deal with a growing population.
What major schemes are taking place between 2010 and 2015?
Our largest scheme will be the construction of a 112km (70 miles) regional water grid that will ensure that customers have at least two sources of supply.
At a cost of £289m, the grid will include 14 new service reservoirs and 22 new or refurbished pumping stations.
It will involve connecting a major part of the network from the north of Bournemouth, through Salisbury and towards Bath.
The grid, which will take eight years to complete, will also include new service reservoirs and building new or refurbishing pumping stations.

Our other major projects are below.
| Major scheme | Approximate cost |
|---|
Improved secondary treatment and enhanced UV treatment at Weston-super-Mare sewage treatment works | £26m |
Increasing capacity to serve growth at Taunton Ham sewage treatment works | £18m |
Water quality improvements at Sutton Bingham water treatment works | £15m |
Advanced sludge treatment at Trowbridge sewage treatment works | £10m |
Additionally, £47m will be spent on tackling sewer flooding, internally and externally, and £67m on renewing water mains across our region.
