Shipton Gorge sewerage improvements

Shipton Gorge landscapeA Wessex Water site near Bridport is being modernised as part of our ongoing improvements to the sewerage network.

The £1.6m project is taking place to meet discharge consent standards set by the Environment Agency, by pumping waste away from the village of Shipton Gorge towards Bridport sewage treatment works, via Burton Bradstock.

A sewage treatment works is being replaced by a pumping station in Shipton Gorge while 1,800 metres of pipeline will be laid over dense hills in Dorset.

The project will provide a big challenge to the construction team, who will be working on remote and hilly farmland.

By drilling some of the route underground they will avoid disturbing a row of mature trees and a stream which runs off into the hills.

Construction manager Joe Edmunds said: “This project is an essential part of Wessex Water’s modernisation process. By re-routing sewage from the old works at Shipton Gorge to Bridport we will maximise our efficiency and reliability in the area for years to come.”

The project is due to finish in November 2009.
