Weymouth sewer renovations

Work has begun to renovate 6km of sewers in Weymouth which are up to 120 years old.Sewer no dig relining

Many sewerage pipes in the town were built in the Victorian era and have begun to deteriorate.

Work will involve cleaning, surveying and repairing sewers to prolong their lifespan for a further 100 years.

What will the work involve?

Work to renovate sewers in Weymouth will take place in two sections.

Firstly engineers will carry out a maintenance check to determine whether the sewers are structurally sound and performing correctly.

This involves inserting a high pressure jetting unit through a manhole to clean debris from the sewer.

A robot equipped with CCTV equipment is then guided through the pipe to identify any repairs which are needed.

Robot cameraDuring the second phase of the work pipes will be mended using ‘no dig’ techniques.

A liner is fed into the sewer through a manhole to form a new protective structural lining to the old pipe.

There is no need to dig up the road during this work unless absolutely necessary.

If only minor repairs are required a patch is pulled into the sewer by a robot and placed over the damaged section of pipe.

When will the work take place?

Maintenance checks on the sewers will start on Monday 26 April 2010 and last five to six weeks.

Work will take place at night between 6pm and 10pm. But CCTV teams may remain on site until midnight.

Once the images captured on CCTV have been reviewed, a programme will be put together to complete renovations of pipes in poor condition.

How will the work affect you?

The jetting work will be carried out in the evening to avoid disruption to daytime road users and residents.

We will be cleaning sewers using the latest state-of-the-art equipment which is among the quietest on the market.

Although some noise will be generated it will be no louder than passing traffic and should not disturb you.

No dig technology has been chosen to renovate Weymouth’s sewers because it eliminates the need for extensive roadworks. It enables us to make quick, high quality repairs with minimal impact on the local community.
