Drinking water protection plans

We want to ensure that water supplies are protected from source to customers’ taps. Drinking water protection plans help us to do this in a systematic, thorough way.

We were one of the first companies to introduce drinking water protection plans and have been developing them over the last five years. They take the form of a detailed document for each water source and supply route, covering the full water production process. This helps ensure water quality can be maintained and improved.

Work over the last year has seen:

• a review of our disinfection policy
• a review of our nitrate policy
• public health meetings
• embedding the plans into day-to-day business operations.

These have helped identify risks to water quality and actions needed to mitigate against them, as well as raise awareness of these issues. Required actions are included in our final business investment plan for 2010-2015.
