Reducing supply interruptions and sewage flooding

We want to keep to a minimum any disruptions, such as water supply interruptions and flooding from the sewerage system.

We have a large and growing asset base for delivering our service and meeting ever higher standards. We have an ongoing programme to maintain our supply and sewerage systems and build additional capacity where needed. We are also trying to improve co-operation with other agencies, particularly those who manage surface water drainage (which can affect sewage flooding).

Improvement works

We completed a number of improvement works and investigations during 2009-10.

Investment in projectsOur cumulative activity over the current five-year programme compared to the monitoring plan targets, shows we have now bettered our targets in a number of areas:

  • renovation of drinking water distribution mains: 28km drinking water distribution mains renovated for quality
  • improvements to sewage treatment: 56 sewage treatment improvements completed – compared to a target of 50
  • improvements to intermittent discharges: 27 intermittent discharges improved – compared to a target of 25
  • internal property flooding solutions: 814 internal property flooding solutions completed – compared to a target of 808
  • external property flooding solutions: 791 external property flooding solutions completed – compared to a target of 746
  • first-time sewerage schemes: increase in the number of properties able to connect to first-time sewerage schemes –744 compared to 666.

The remaining investigations of the programme were also completed in line with the targets set:

  • water treatment works improvements – 18 now complete
  • low flows investigations – 13 now complete
  • sewage treatment investigations – 16 now complete.
