Looking after assets

Maintaining our assets

Our vision

We aim to manage and maintain our assets by making sure they operate efficiently and effectively providing high quality treatment and service.

What steps are needed to achieve this? We believe we need to:

  • have asset maintenance programmes aimed at stable serviceability
  • fully integrate sustainability principles and practice within our capital programme and scheme options.

Where are we now?

We need to invest in and maintain our assets to meet current and future standards for both customers and the environment. So how do we do this?

  • Each year we invest considerable sums of money in our plant, pipes and machinery aimed at catering for a growing population and regulatory requirements.
  • We agree this investment every five years with our financial regulator, Ofwat.
  • As well as investing in our assets, we also focus on maintaining them. We were pleased to maintain our PAS55 accreditation this year – we were the first water company to have achieved this internationally recognised standard for asset management.
  • We carry out proactive maintenance to try and reduce the likelihood of problems such as mains bursts, leakage and sewer collapses.
  • We measure the success of this work through key performance indicators that relate to different sustainability criteria.
  • We carry out planned exercises to prepare for the event of any emergencies in connection with our infrastructure.
  • Our approach to risk management aims to help improve our services and resilience and we aim to ensure that risks are understood and managed through the business.
