About this report
Welcome to our new online sustainability report, providing information on a wide range of our sustainability activities during 2008-09.
We have taken this approach to make information more easily available on our progress towards becoming a more sustainable and generally responsible business.
This report is accompanied by our annual sustainability review, Striking the balance – a shorter publication this year, which looks at the challenges we face and the work we are doing to tackle them.
The priorities in Striking the balance were selected based on customer and stakeholder surveys. These helped identify the key issues that people wished to be addressed – ranging from ensuring future water supplies to lowering our greenhouse gas emissions.
This web report builds on this publication by providing information on our sustainability aims, an update on our current position and examples of a wider range of our activities over the past year.
Finding your way around
We recognise that different people have different interests. To help you move around this site and select the topics you want to know more about, we have split the report into the five key sections, or capitals, of our Sustainability vision.
Customers and communities
Environment
Employees
Infrastructure
Finances
These are then further divided into key themes relevant to each section, with information on our aims and examples of activity during the past year.
Separate sections on our approach to sustainability, plus some selected case studies on work carried out over the past year are also provided; along with some useful links and downloads.
Assessing performance
We also try to quantify our performance over the past five years by using sustainability indicators, which help identify where improvements have been made and where more work is needed.
For many of the key topics, graphs can be found on this site and also grouped together within our separate Sustainability indicators booklet, now in its sixth year of production.
Our Striking the balance and Sustainability indicators publications can be downloaded here.
All this information reflects our focus on integrating sustainability into our day to day business management and long-term planning. We hope you find it useful.
