Water filters and softeners

Water softeners chemically remove the hardness from water, preventing a build up of scale in the domestic hot water system.

If you have a water softener, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and to keep an unsoftened cold water supply for drinking and cooking.

To prevent the water supply from being contaminated accidentally by back siphoning of water from the softener, you should make sure that the installation satisfies the Water Fittings Regulations.

Water conditioners

Water conditioners are designed to help overcome the problems of hard water by preventing hardness deposits from sticking to heating elements, pipes, etc, allowing them to be flushed away.

Unlike water softeners, these devices do not chemically remove the hardness from the water. Although some customers have benefited from the installation of water conditioners, they have not worked everywhere and Wessex Water does not recommend their use.
