Archimedean screws
When the sewage enters the treatment works, it passes through large screens which remove any large debris such as rags and plastic.

The sewage then needs to be transported to the highest point of the site so it can flow by gravity through the rest of the works. This can be done using either electric pumps or an Archimedian screw.

The water now passes through fine screens, with holes just 5mm wide to take out any further debris. Removed waste is compacted and taken away to a licensed waste disposal site.
