Funds help prize garden flourish

Residents in Bristol who have transformed derelict land into an award winning garden have scooped a cash boost.
Bedminster Station Gardening Group has received a Watermark award from Wessex Water to buy bulbs and plants for a garden next to the train station it has been working on since 2002.
Christopher Orlik, Bedminster Station Gardening Group’s coordinator, said: “A waste site which we cleared and planted is now an established garden and this Watermark award will help us put the finishing touches to the site.
“Once we complete this work it will just be a question of weeding and putting in bedding plants every summer.”
The garden, in Fraser Street, has won several awards including a Royal Horticultural Society Neighbourhood Award and a Bristol in Bloom prize, which recognises work that has improved the city’s environment and civic pride.
It received a previous Watermark award in 2008 which was also spent on bulbs and plants for the garden.
The Watermark awards provide funds for environmental projects within the Wessex Water area.
Now in its 17th year, it has supported more than 500 initiatives. Organised by the Conservation Foundation, all projects are judged by a panel chaired by its president David Bellamy.
Sue Goodland, of Wessex Water, presented Bedminster Station Gardening Group with its £100 Watermark award earlier this week.
