Why save water?
We have 4 key reasons supporting our water efficiency campaign.
Supply demand balance
At a time of increasing population pressures and unreliable rainfall, one of our key challenges is to ensure there is enough water to meet our customers’ needs at all times. By not wasting water you can help us meet this challenge.
Environment
We treat and provide drinking water to 1.2 million customers. This water comes from our reservoirs and groundwater sources. We are committed to supplying this water without causing negative impacts to our rivers and environment. The higher the demand, the more is abstracted from our water sources, and this can impact on river flows and ecology. 1 litre less used = 1 litre more in the environment.
Carbon
All the water we supply is treated to high standards to conform to Drinking Water Inspectorate regulations. We do this as efficiently as possible and use renewable energy sources where we can, but inevitably carbon emissions result from treating and transporting this water to you, and in your homes electricity and gas is used to heat it- the less you use, the smaller your carbon footprint!
Wrong to waste
Like other natural resources, water is a precious resource and should not be wasted. On average every person uses 150 litres of water each day in their homes which is 70% more water than we used 30 years ago. Some of this water is wasted by inefficient appliances and some of our daily habits. Read more on our water saving homes to find out what simple things you can do to waste less.
As a company we are committed to playing our part in reducing water wasting by reducing leakage and being efficient with water in our treatment processes. We are encouraging our customers to also save water wherever they can through our roadshows, water efficiency seminars and working with schools.
We can all play a part and every little saving per person has a big overall effect.
So, by thinking about your use and by making simple changes to your habits, you can all reduce the amount of water you waste and how much we have to abstract from the ground and rivers. This could save you money not only on your water bill, but also on your energy bills.
