Water supply grid
The new water supply grid is a £230 million project which will enable us to meet demand for water over the next 25 years without the need to develop new resources
This eight year project started in 2010 and was completed safely, on time and within budget in March 2018.
It comprised more than 50 individual schemes across Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset and will allow us now to redistribute surplus water to where it is needed.
We have built more 200km of trunk mains, 24 refurbished or new pumping stations and 12 new storage tanks.

The new infrastructure ensures we:
• meet future water supply demand
• improve the security of supply for customers – it ensures customers have two sources of water
• meet reductions in the abstraction licences required by the Environment Agency to improve flows in some rivers and protect river ecology
• deal with seasonal or occasional deteriorating raw water quality, particularly increasing concentrations of nitrates at some of our groundwater sources.
