Fly fish for rainbow and brown trout

Season dates: 28th February – 16th October 2022.

Sutton Bingham reservoir is a great spot for anglers - you can fly fish for rainbow and brown trout from a boat or the bank with excellent top water trout fishing available both early and late in the season.  Anglers also have the option of fishing most of the season with a floating line.  

The reservoir is very well stocked with rainbows and brown trout averaging 2lb with some surprise double figure specimens too! 

Among the most popular flies are damsels, gold ribbed hare’s ears and montanas, fished on the point, with smaller nymphs such as crunchers, pheasant tails, buzzers and diawl bachs and the its a nymph fished as droppers. You will find a selection of the most popular fly patterns and leader for sale at the reservoir.

Facilities for anglers include a spacious fishing lodge with a large veranda overlooking the water. A fish preparation room is also available where anglers can gut and clean their catch before setting off for home.  

Expert advice: Whether you are a beginner or experience angler, you can benefit from the expert advice of our rangers who are accomplished fly tiers and casting tutors. Special training covering casting and advice on the best flies to use is available for beginnings. 

If you want to get more involved, Sutton Bingham Fly Fishing Club is looking for new members to take part in their monthly events as well as competitions held throughout the season. 

Tips and tactics from ranger Ivan Tinsley 

  • Make the most of the first 4.5 months of the season when the fishing is at its best.  
  • Change the droppers from time to time in case of a change in the early hatches but keep the weighted pattern on to act as an anchor.
