January work in High Street, Chippenham
Wessex Water is building a new sewer to serve Chippenham’s High Street, meaning the road will be closed on non-market days from 5 January 2020.
Work will take place from Sunday to Thursday in order to minimise disruption to the weekly market. High Street will be resurfaced once the work has been completed, with the closure in place for around 12 weeks.
A new sewer is required after we identified that some commercial properties in the area have been misconnected to our network, affecting water quality in the River Avon. High Street will closed at all times during the work, although shops and businesses will be open as normal and access will be maintained for deliveries and pedestrians.
Wessex Water’s Richard Lewis, who is planning the work, said: “This work is necessary to ensure the sewer system is fit for purpose and safeguard the River Avon.
“We appreciate that the market is hugely important to the town community, which is why there will be no working on Fridays and Saturdays.
“Some overnight work may be necessary to complete the scheme as quickly as possible, and once we’re finished the council’s highways department will be taking the opportunity to resurface High Street.
“We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by our work and will make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum.”
