Types of flooding
If you have spotted a flood, find out who to contact depending on where it is coming from.
Sewer flooding
Sewer flooding happens when the sewer system becomes overwhelmed, causing sewage to back up into homes, gardens or streets.
We can help with sewer flooding – find out what to do and how to get in touch.
River flooding
River flooding happens when rivers overflow their banks due to excessive rainfall.
If rising water levels have caused a nearby river to flood, please contact the Environment Agency.
Surface water flooding
Surface water flooding occurs when heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems, leading to rainwater pooling on streets and low-lying areas.
If you have spotted rainwater that isn’t draining, please contact your local council.
Groundwater flooding
Groundwater flooding happens when the water table rises above the ground level, often after prolonged periods of heavy rain.
If water rising up through the ground has caused flooding, please contact your local council.
Highway flooding
Highway flooding occurs when heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems and results in water sitting on roads and highways.
If you see water pooling on a road or highway, please contact National Highways.
