Customers hit the target with big water savings
Wessex Water customers have proved to be water-saving champions following one of the driest summers on record.
Between August and September, the company received more than 15,000 pledges to save 20 litres of water or more each day – a potential daily saving of 300,000 litres or 1.5 million cups of tea across the water company's region.
The Target 20 campaign offered a water efficient washing machine as the prize in a draw of customers who made the pledge, reducing their usage by taking simple steps such as shorter showers and reusing water in the garden.
While a winner has been drawn and the campaign has now finished, Wessex Water said continuing to use water wisely will help reduce bills for households on a meter and keep more water in the environment.
The company did not need to introduce a hosepipe ban this summer and has invested in a supply grid to move water around the region, yet groundwater and reservoir levels remain below average for the time of year.
Paul Saynor, Water Production Director at Wessex Water, said: "Despite some recent wet weather, our groundwater and reservoir sources remain below average for this time of year, and it will take some time for them to recover.
"We can all help by keeping up good water-saving habits, while our teams continue to ramp up leak repairs in our network."
